Things to Do in Tenerife, Spain. Tours to TenerifeThe Spanish Canary Islands lie southwest of Spain, off the coast of Africa. Tourism is a major industry in the Canaries, but it also produces vegetables, fruits and grains. The major island of the Canaries is Tenerife. It is larger and has more people than any of the other six Canary Islands. Visitors who come to Tenerife to vacation find plenty of things to do on the island.

The Arts

Visit two important art galleries in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to absorb Canarian culture. La Recova Arts Centre (no website; Plaza de la Madera, Santa Cruz de Tenerife; +34 922 290 770) has a number of art exhibits. The museum often features local painters and sculptors. The Museo de Bellas Artes (no website; 12 Plaza del Principe, Santa Cruz de Tenerife; +34 922 244 358) houses paintings and sculptures as well and contains artwork from as far back as the 17th Century. The Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife (ost.es) offers about 20 regular programs each year plus guest appearances at other events. Guest artists and conductors are notable figures in the symphony world.

Water Adventures

Tenerife has an abundance of snorkeling and diving tours. Many of the companies provide your equipment. One advantage in going on a professional tour is that tour guides know the best spots for viewing the eels, turtles, exotic fish and colorful flora off the coast of Tenerife. Dive and Sea Tenerife (diveandseatenerife.com) offers advanced PADI diving courses as well as beginner classes. It has an extensive list of dive sites for excursions and includes trips for snorkeling. Eden Catamaran (edencatamaran.com), which launches out of Puerto Colon and Costa Adeje, has tours of various lengths for whale and dolphin watching and is available for private tours.

Nightlife

A Saudade (asaudade.es) brings back the '70s and '80s in the biggest club venue in all of Tenerife. Boogie to disco in the nightclub that covers two large rooms and sports seven bars. It also has two terraces for extra elbow room. Just outside Santa Cruz, the club provides live bands and DJ music on Friday and Saturday nights. Visitors looking for excitement and loud music will find it in Playa de las Americas. The party strip called Veronicas has plenty of places to eat, drink, listen to music and dance. The Patch, another collection of fun spots, has establishments that are family- and child-friendly.

Golfing

Tenerife's year-round mild weather and beautiful natural landscape create the perfect atmosphere for golfers. Tenerife has a number of courses from which to choose. Golf del Sur (golfdelsur.es) is a large resort area on the southeastern side of Tenerife. The 27-hole Golf del Sur course offers tennis courts and miniature golf in addition to its links. It provides lessons at its Golf Academy for those who want to learn to play or to get professional advice for improving their game. Golf las Americas (golflasamericas.com), just east of Playa de las Americas on the southwestern side of Tenerife, is an 18-hole course. The course is part of a larger resort area that includes the Hotel Las Madrigueras with in-house restaurants, swimming pool and small spa.
